This was an existing border which needed a planting design and the removal of a lot of Japanese anemone.
The clients wanted a border which would look good all year round. There was a colour theme of blues, pinks and purples.
First of all the border needed digging over to remove some Japanese anemone, which had started to become invasive. The plants chosen included Hyacinth ‘Woodstock’ and Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ for early colour and fragrance, Alliums ‘Purple Sensation’, cristophii and sphaerocephalon, Penstemon ‘Garnet’ and ‘Sour Grapes’ and Geranium ‘Rozanne’ for their ability to flower all summer, the architectural Cirsium rivulare with its huge burgundy thistle flowers beloved by bees, the tactile grass Stipa tenuissima and Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ and the beautiful violet coloured Michaelmas daisy Aster amellus ‘Veilchenkoenigin.’
Since the clients are a busy family with two young children, they have also chosen to have the border maintained by Zinnia Garden Design.
